Nachchaduwa Tank It was a busy evening at the banks of the tank as hundreds of tourists and locals flock to have a nice cool bath. Few fishing boats were seen floating around while a man threw his fishing net in to the water hoping for a big catch. I managed to take this snap as I was going back to my guest house after a bath with my family. The sun was setting on the west as this man just came delicately balancing his bicycle as a like in a circus.
Built by King Mugalan II, Nachchaduwa accumulates water from both the Malwathu Oya and Maminiyawa Oya. King Vijayabahu (1055-1110) has done a significant rehabilitation and development, say the chronicles.
In 1906 the Irrigation Department took the responsibility to restore the tank which was ruined in the past. The Department also took further effort in 1917 by improving the tank’s capacity. In 1957 the Great Flood caused severe damage to the tank, nevertheless in 1958 the rehabilitation work was completed. Today it receives water from the Mahaweli System.
